Physician Workload

Canada is currently in need of approximately 3,000 physicians. This shortage in physicians will persist well into the future given the large number of physician retirements that will occur over the next five to ten years.

A physician works an average of 73 hours per week in Canada. This includes regular schedule, after-hours and on-call duties.

Physicians have been working beyond, full capacity in recent years.

Demands on rural practice include heavy on-call schedules and physician "burnout".

In P.E.I., doctors work an average of 97 hours per week. That is almost 14 hours each and every day.
