Demographics - Our aging population
By 2026/27, seniors will
consist of 21% of the population. Approximately 60% of health
spending will be devoted to caring for this age group. |
Nearly 25% of Ontario’s physicians
will retire by the year 2005. In 2008, there will be more
retiring physicians than medical school graduates. |
Faced with an aging workforce,
Canada needs about 2,500 new physicians per year. In the current
system, there are less than 2,000 graduating physicians per year. |
Keep in mind, that
specialists make up more than 50% of Canadian physicians. This
means Canada needs at least 3,000 additional family doctors. |
