Demographics - Our aging population

By 2026/27, seniors will consist of 21% of the population. Approximately 60% of health spending will be devoted to caring for this age group.

Nearly 25% of Ontario’s physicians will retire by the year 2005. In 2008, there will be more retiring physicians than medical school graduates.

Faced with an aging workforce, Canada needs about 2,500 new physicians per year. In the current system, there are less than 2,000 graduating physicians per year.

Keep in mind, that specialists make up more than 50% of Canadian physicians. This means Canada needs at least 3,000 additional family doctors.
